They provided food, tools, clothing and building materials to the Native Americans as well as European settlers through the end of the 1900s. Although their numbers were severely depleted they are recovering and still free range in areas such as Yellowstone NP, Teton Park, The Black Hills and a few Canadian provinces. There are also many private herds where they are raised for food production.
